Watering New Lawns

For Seed or Sod Installations

Immediately After Installation

  • Seed: Keep the top ½” of soil consistently moist (not puddled).

  • Sod: Water within one hour of installation to soak soil 3–4″ deep.

Watering Schedule

Timeline Frequency Goal
Days 1–14 3 times per day Keep soil surface damp

Suggested Times: 8 AM, 1 PM, 6 PM

Weeks 3–4 Once daily Encourage root growth
Weeks 5–6 Every other day Transition to deeper watering
After 6 weeks 2–3 times per week Maintain 1–1.5 inches of water per week (including rainfall)

Best Time

Water early morning between 5–9 a.m.
Avoid watering midday (high evaporation) or overnight (risk of fungus).

Pro Tips

  1. Deep, infrequent watering builds drought resistance
  2. Adjust frequency during heat waves or windy weather
  3. Use a sprinkler timer or smart irrigation controller for consistency

Further Help

  1. Contact a local lawn care service
  2. Have them provide a core soil aeration
  3. Over seed again
  4. Apply a high phosphorus starter fertilizer 12-24-12
  5. Repeat the watering process from day one
